Nestled at 6 & 8 First Street in Kingston’s Trench Town, the Culture Yard is the beating heart of reggae. This humble row of government yard houses is where Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer crafted the songs that would transform Jamaican music and inspire the world. Today, the Yard is preserved as a living museum that honors the roots of ska, rocksteady and reggae and invites visitors to step inside the place where the legend began.
Your guided pilgrimage takes you into the Wailers’ Room, the communal yard and the murals that tell the story of the community. Knowledgeable residents share memories and explain how the social and political struggles of the 1960s gave rise to a music of freedom and resilience. Hands-on workshops let you join a drumming circle, strum a few chords with a local musician, or pick up conversational Patois in a fun group lesson.
Visiting the Culture Yard isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about supporting a community that keeps its heritage alive. Proceeds from tours and merchandise go directly back into the Trench Town Community Fund for youth programs, education and neighborhood improvements. Come feel the rhythm and contribute to a story that continues today.
